Course Description

Aim
  • The AS level in German teaches the students how to write, read and speak in the chosen language.
  • The students learn about the culture and society of the country whose language they are studying.
  • Native texts are used throughout the course for students to read, analyse and evaluate.
  • The aim of the A2 level course is to extend the knowledge of the student further and take their skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking of German to a higher level. It consolidates and builds on the skills learned in the AS-level course and leads to the A2-level exam.
Relevance
  • Students who learn a modern foreign language have an added advantage and can apply their knowledge and skills in everyday life and in business life.
  • More opportunities abroad are available for students who can take their skills and knowledge to other countries and communicate effectively in the native tongue.
  • An A level in German give a good foundation in these modern foreign languages for further study in higher education, and can often be used in conjunction with an additional subject, e.g. business.

Assessment

AS level: Two written examinations and an oral examination.
A2 level: Oral, reading listening and written exam with coursework.

Informal assessment is continuous throughout the AS level by regular marked assignments set by the tutor. In addition, tutors mark students' written work throughout the year, giving personalised feedback. This will aid students in preparing for their coursework and written exam.
