Course Description

Aim
  • The course develops knowledge and understanding of the purposes of accounting and the concepts and techniques of financial statements and management accounting.
  • At the end of A2 level Accounting, the students are able to undertake professional accounting tasks confidently, such as double-entry book-keeping, bank reconciliation, as well as assist in the preparation of financial statements.
  • The course contributes to an understanding of spiritual, moral, ethical and social issues of business, as the students consider the non-financial aspects of accounting, which question profitability as the sole or main determinant of the company's policy.
Relevance
  • The qualification provides exemption from certain professional qualifications and NVQ assessment levels in some business areas.
  • The course provides the underpinning knowledge and valuable experience for aspiring professionals who are preparing for any management role.
  • The accounting profession offers a number of varied career opportunities in Chartered Accountancy, Management Accountancy, industry and the public sector.
  • A2 Level Accounting gives an excellent foundation for further study in this subject or in related subjects in higher education.

Assessment

AS level: three written examinations.
A2 level: three written examinations.

Informal assessment is continuous throughout AS and A2 by regular marked assignments set by the tutor.

Entry Requirements

GCSE mean score of 5.5, including English and Mathematics at grade C or above. Many of the examination questions require written answers rather than calculations.
