Course Description
Aim
- AS and A level Physics builds on the knowledge learnt from Dual Award Science or GCSE Physics, and extends the ideas studied at this previous level, i.e. linear motion, dynamics, pressure.
- The AS level introduces new areas and concepts, many of which have a high mathematical content. These include emf in circuits, magnetic effects, light, interference and diffraction.
- At A2 level the students go on to study circular motion, oscillations, fields and quantum phenomena.
Relevance
- AS and A level Physics is relevant for a number of careers, including airline pilot and all branches of engineering.
- A2 level Physics gives the students the basic knowledge they need to take their studies further in higher education in this subject or a related subject.
- Practical work is mainly undertaken using an AS/A2 level physics kit.
Assessment
AS level: two written examinations and a practical examination.
A2 level: two written examinations and a practical examination.
Informal assessment is continuous throughout AS and A2 by regular marked assignments set by the tutor.
