Turquoise Levels 17 and 18
PM Turquoise Level takes into account the fact that children enjoy reading stories about danger at this stage. Many of the plots of the books in this level involve children’s experience of fear and excitement – they are the kind of books that children like to pick up and read.
This level also develops readers’ understanding of particular topics by offering clusters of books about the same or related subjects, such as dinosaurs or road safety. PM Turquoise Level secures children’s recognition of many irregular high frequency words that were introduced in Green and Orange levels. These include believe, bought, eight, minute, quiet, should, their and through.
This level is useful for the introduction and mastery of simple elisions, such as let’s, who’s, didn’t and that’s. This level also introduces important themes, such as courage, kindness, bullying and anger. By the end of the Turquoise Level, children will be confident with around 450 high frequency words and know many more interest words.
