PM Red Level
Red Levels 3, 4 and 5
When children are able to recognise 25–30 high frequency words they are ready for PM Red Level books. Transition from Level 2/3 PM Starters to PM Red Level Story Books is made easy by the overlapping of high frequency words and sentence structures.
Familiar sets of words such as Here is a… I am… Here comes… Look at… said the… reappear. The difference is that such constructions are no longer repeated on every page, so these books cannot be read from oral memory, but demand close attention to print.
Several families and animal characters are introduced at this level and recur at later levels. These include Sam and her dog Bingo, Jack and Billy, Kate, James and Nick, Kitty Cat, Little Chimp and Ben. Approximately 50 high frequency words should be known by the end of Red Level.
