Size of bits and rate of reaction

This graph shows how quickly 1g of calcium carbonate reacted with 50ml of hydrochloric acid. We used different sized bits of carbonate. We measured how much carbon dioxide gas was made in twenty seconds.

Making the bits smaller made the reaction happen more quickly.

This happens because more particles of carbonate could react with the acid when it was broken into smaller bits.
