Making ammonia

To make ammonia nitrogen from the air is combined with hydrogen. The hydrogen is made from methane gas.

Hydrogen and nitrogen are pumped over hot iron. The iron is a catalyst. It makes the reaction go faster. Only about 15% of the gases become ammonia. The rest are recycled until they react.

Ammonia is combined with oxygen to make nitric acid.
