Making nitrate fertiliser

Nitric acid is used to make nitrate fertiliser for plants.

The acid is neutralised with ammonia. This makes ammonium nitrate solution.

Evaporating the solution leaves ammonium nitrate crystals.

Ammonium nitrate is often mixed with ammonium phosphate, and potassium chloride to make NPK fertiliser, which provides the essential ingredients for plant growth.
