Cell

Support in cells

The vacuoles inside each plant cell contain water. When there is plenty of water in the cell, it presses out against the cell wall. The cell is firm.

If the cells lose water the vacuole becomes smaller. It does not press out against the cell wall. The cell shrinks away from the cell wall. The cells become weaker. The plant wilts.
