Nitrates

Nitrates are substances which contain nitrogen and oxygen. They are used by the plant to make proteins.

Proteins are needed to make new cells as the plant grows.

A plant will not grow well without nitrates. Most plants take in nitrates from the soil.

Some plants, such as peas, can live in soil without nitrates in. Their roots contain bacteria which make nitrates from nitrogen gas in the air.
