Magnesium and iron

Magnesium is a mineral in chlorophyl, the green pigment in leaves. Iron is needed to make the chlorophyl.

Plants need chlorophyl to absorb light for photosynthesis.

Without magnesium or iron, plants can not make chlorophyl.
