Refraction

The ray of light passing through this glass block has been bent. This is called refraction.

The light ray is bent twice. When it enters the block it bends inwards. When it leaves the block it bends outwards.

The degree of bending depends on what the materials are. It also depends on the angle which the light rays hit the block.

Scientists explain refraction by thinking of light as waves.
