Explaining refraction

Scientists explain refraction by thinking of light as waves.

Light waves travel at different speeds in different materials. They travel more quickly in air than in glass.

When a beam of light hits the glass surface at an angle, some of the waves are slowed down before others.

One side of the beam slows down before the other. This makes the light beam bend.
