Silicon

Silicon is a grey solid. It makes up 25% of the Earth's crust. Sand is silicon oxide. It is also present in many gemstones. Silicon was discovered by Jons Bezelius in Sweden in1824.

It is a material in electrical components such as transistors. Computer chips are made of silicon, too. Sand, a compound of silicon, is used to make glass.
