Oxygen is a colourles gas. It makes up 20% of the atomosphere. Other substances react with oxygen when they burn. It was discovered by Priestly.

Oxygen is essential for life. Living things use it in respiration to get energy from food. It is used in hospitals, welding, and rockets.
