Nitrogen is a colourless gas. It makes up 78% of the atomosphere. It is not very reactive. It was named by Lavoisier.

Nitrogen is essential for life on earth. Proteins contain a lot of nitrogen.

It is an important element in foods, fertilisers and explosives. Most nitrogen is used to make ammonia.
