Boron

Boron is a black solid. It is unusual because it is similar to both metals and non metals. It was first isolated by Humphrey Davey in England in 1808.

Boron is used in fireworks. It has a bright green flame. Compounds of boron are important as a flux in welding, and an antiseptic in medicine, and as a water softener in washing powders.
