The Periodic Table

The elements are arranged in order of their atomic numbers.

The vertical columns contain similar elements. They are called groups. Some groups have been given names.

The transition metals separate groups 2 and 3. Organising the elements in this way makes it easier to make predictions about an element from its position in the table.
