Ions

An ion is made when an atom gains or loses electrons.

An ion has an electric charge because it has a different number of protons and electrons.

Sodium atoms can easily lose an electron. They become positively charged ions.

Chlorine atoms can easily gain an extra electron. They become negatively charged ions.
