Christiaan Barnard 1922 - Present day

South Africa

In 1967, Christiaan was the first surgeon to transplant a human heart.

The patient's body rejected his new heart and he died after eighteen days.

Barnard found ways to overcame these problems.

Heart transplants became much safer and are now quite common.
