Graham
Hill
Graham Hill studied Natural Sciences followed by a Postgraduate
Certificate in Education at Trinity College, Cambridge. His first
teaching appointment was at Marlborough College where he started
to write science texts for students and teachers as well as articles
for academic journals as diverse as Education in Chemistry, School
Science Review and the British Journal of Educational Psychology.
As
a young teacher, Graham was awarded a national prize for Science
Teaching, which led to contributions to the Nuffield Chemistry Project.
At this time, his interest in objective testing also led to an Advanced
Diploma in Education.
After
five years at Marlborough College, Graham was appointed Head of
the Chemistry Department at Bristol Grammar School where he was
joined shortly afterwards by John Holman. Their partnership in teaching
and writing spawned a large number of publications, the best known
being Chemistry in Context, together with a large array of peripheral
materials such as audiocassettes, computer software and overhead
projector transparencies.
Graham
became Head of Science and then Senior Teacher at Bristol Grammar
School. He then moved to Dr. Challoners Grammar School, Amersham
as Deputy Head. In the late 1980's, Graham's involvement in science
education at a national level led to secondments first as a Senior
Fellow at the University of York and then as Chairman of the Association
for Science Education.
Graham
returned to Challoners in September 1989 and became Headmaster in
1993. Here he continues to follow his first academic passion - teaching
and writing about science and particularly chemistry.
