Education Program: Education for Sustainable Development
http://www.worldbank.org/depweb/
This site has been created by the World Bank. It provides
an excellent range of online activities about sustainable
development for use in the classroom. The focus of the
site is a collection of Learning Modules. These are divided
into three sectors - social, economic and environmental.
Each sector contains modules that explore different issues
of sustainable development through a specific indicator.
Currently, these include population growth rate, gross
national product (GNP) per capita , and access to safe
water. Over time, we will add more sectors and learning
modules, as well as improve and build upon the existing
ones, incorporating new data and feedback and suggestions
from users like you.
There is a collection of maps and charts showing development
information, with online activities, which will enhance
pupils' abilities to interpret data. There is even an
opportunity for students around the world to contribute
to the Sustainable Development Post, an online newspaper.
The site also includes a glossary of development terms.
This site extends the activities provided in Places,
particularly the section about sustainable development
on pages 12-13.
There are a number of ways the website could be used in
the Geography classroom.

Notes
The following are ICT Activities related to those
provided in the Places pupils' book. You could
copy and paste the text into a wordprocessing file
or DTP software to create your own activity sheets,
amending the text provided to suit the needs of your
particular pupils, and your school's software. |
ICT Activity 1
How else may development be measured?
(pages 10-11)
This is an ICT version of Activity 1 on page 11.
ICT applications used: internet or CD-ROM database, spreadsheet,
wordprocessor
(a)
Use the United Nations CyberSchoolBus website:
http://www.un.org/Pubs/CyberSchoolBus/
The InfoNation database can be found in the Resource section
of the website, or use the Population Concern Population
& Development Database CD-ROM to research similar
statistics to those on page 11 of Places, for 10
different countries, half more economically developed
countries (MEDCs) and the other half less economically
developed countries (LEDCs).
(b)
Enter the data into a spreadsheet, with a second column
for each set of data to enter the ranking for each country.
The Sort facility of the spreadsheet can be used to rank
the countries for each data set.
(c)
In the Total column create a formula to total the ranking
scores for each country. Again the total column can be
sorted using the spreadsheet tools to determine the level
of development for each country.
(d)
You could create charts from the raw data for the different
measures of development or from the final ranking scores.
(e)
Wordprocess paragraphs describing the features of the
least developed and most developed countries. You could
copy and paste some of your charts into this analysis
of your findings.
