Hazards
(Unit 2)

What happens when a volcano erupts? (pages 38-39)
http://www.geo.mtu.edu/~boris/STROMBOLI.html

What happens in an earthquake? (pages 40-41)
This section of Interactions provides a case study of the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. The USGS has recently added a fact sheet about this disaster to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the event. This can be found at:
http://wrgis.wr.usgs.gov/fact-sheet/fs151-99/
The fact sheet outlines the events of the quake and includes maps, photographs and diagrams. It goes on to outline how the USGS has tried to learn from the quake and improve preparedness for a future event. The website could be used by pupils to complete the activities on page 25 of Interactions. At the very least teachers could download the maps and photographs into a DTP program in order to produce their own activity sheet, or print resources onto an OHP transparency.

Museum of San Francisco
http://www.sfmuseum.org/
Major Online Exhibits includes a staggering array of resources about the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes including eyewitness reports, photographs, maps and charts, news cuttings, police and fire department reports about the quakes. Links are provided to other sites including The San Francisco Chronicle, an online newspaper with a section of resources about the 1989 earthquake. The collection of photographs is particularly impressive. Pupils could complete 'The hazards enquiry' in Interactions (pages 48-49) by using the information available on this website.

Online Field Trip to the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake
http://emerald.ucsc.edu/~es10/fieldtripEarthQ/EarthQWelcome.html
This is an excellent resource which describes in detail the causes and effects of the earthquake, including excellent photographs and diagrams.

There are a number of other US websites which have been developed to offer people advice and support on how to cope with a major earthquake. Pupils could access information from these sites in producing their report. On page 94 it is suggested that pupils wordprocess their enquiry: information from the websites could be copied and pasted into a file and edited by the pupils.

Earthquake Information from the USGS
http://quake.usgs.gov/
This site provides a wide range of information about earthquakes including advice on how to prepare for an event.

Plate tectonics (pages 32-35)
An online book about the theory of plate tectonics, This Dynamic Earth [USGS] is available at:
http://pubs.usgs.gov/publications/text/dynamic.html
Although some of the text will be demanding for KS3 pupils, there is an excellent collection of illustrations available.

The hazards enquiry
(pages 48-51)
The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) is a regional planning agency owned and operated by the cities and counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, working to help solve problems in areas such as land use, housing, environmental quality, and economic development. Its website includes an excellent section on earthquakes:
http://www.abag.ca.gov/bayarea/eqmaps/eqmaps.html
Links are provided here to pages and sites providing the user with information about how to prepare for an earthquake and what is being done in the Bay Area to try to limit earthquake damage. Maps of vulnerable areas are also provided. This site is therefore ideal to enable pupils to complete 'The hazards enquiry' in Interactions. It complements the key questions identified in the enquiry, most notably in section 2 and the conclusion on page 51.

Tourism
(Unit 3)

National Parks (pages 56-59)
More detailed information about individual National Parks can be found at the park websites. They include photographs, maps, facts and figures, and some include information specifically for teachers and pupils.

Disneyland Paris - a holiday dream? (pages 64-65)
Disneyland Paris
http://www.disneylandparis.com/
The official site gives a range of information about visiting Disneyland Paris, including a downloadable map of how to get there. Pupils could use this site in conjunction with Activities 2 and 3 on page 51 of Interactions.

Ski France La Clusaz
http://www.skifrance.fr/station.cfm?destination=740014&langue=a
This tourist website includes a range of information about activities at the resort in both summer and winter. There is a map to show the location of the resort, together with an excellent diagram of the ski slopes. Pupils could use the resources from this site to attempt the extra activity on page 53 of Interactions. The page of the travel brochure advertising La Clusaz could be created by the pupils using a DTP program, with resources inserted from the website.
