Pages
12-13 and 14-15 outline the characteristic features
of depressions and anticyclones over Britain. Pages
16-17 explains the use of synoptic charts and satellite
images. To link in with these sections of the pupil
book, pupils could use a number of different web
sites to track the passage of a depression across
Britain over a number of days. They could collect
a number of satellite images and, if severe weather
occurred, they could also download news reports
of the effects of the weather system from on-line
newspapers such as The Times http://www.sunday-times.co.uk
or Telegraph http://www.telegraph.co.uk
Satellite images can be obtained daily four times
a day from the Met Office website http://www.meto.govt.uk
Pupils could copy and paste these images into a
DTP or word processing file and describe the changes
over a number of days. This would help pupils appreciate
how long it takes depressions, for example, to move
across the country as well as providing a practical
example of the ideas outlined in the Key Geography
for GCSE pupil book.
