New Key Geography for GCSE Links - Chapter 10 - Settlement & urban growth

What are the different functions of settlements? - pages 152 and 153 and Activity Sheet 10.3

Click on the link to the multimap website http://www.multimap.com/, after you have read through the following instructions:

1. Use the search facility on the site to find 1: 50 000 maps for each of the settlements named in the table.
2. Look carefully at each map together with Diagram A on page 152 of the pupil’s book, identify the original and present-day functions of each settlement using the maps.
3. To write up your findings in a table you could copy and paste the table below into a word processing file, quoting the map evidence in the final column, it would be useful to include 6 figure grid references here.
4. In the final row of the table write in the name of your local town or city and repeat the activity for this settlement.

Click on the link to the Multimap website http://www.multimap.com/ after you have read the following instructions:

a) Type in Carlisle in the search box on the Multimap home page.
b) Select 1: 50 000 scale
c) Locate the inner city area 399555, click on the area and zoom into it at 1:10 000.
d) Once this image has downloaded click on the aerial photo button.
e) Copy and paste the aerial photograph into a desk top publishing file, compare it with your annotated map and use the software tools to label features.
f) Repeat the process for the suburb at Knowefield at 402557.
