Chapter 22 World Development

United Nations Development Programme home page:

A huge site, with masses of information. The Focus Areas section is a good place to start – with sections on poverty, gender and environment; there is also an excellent and extensive News section (which includes an archive).

UN Economic and Social Development links page:

This is an alphabetical subject index, linking you to the websites of UN programmes and agencies relating to ecomomic and social development topics.

The World Bank Group home page:

"Our dream is a world free of poverty". Sadly, this enormous site makes it only too clear how much more there is to do to realise this simple dream. Check out the site map for an overview: data is available by region and country, by topic and sector; the research section, the publications section (many downloadable) and the schools section are huge and full of interesting and useful material.

Canadian International Development Agency,Virtual Library on International Development main page:

A collection of links to international development resources on the internet, arranged by topics, countries, regions and organisations, plus a miscellany of sites under the heading 'Development Reference Desk’ (includes statistical sources).

World Health Organization home page:

Another seriously large site. The 'Health topics' section is organised by disease; the Reports section includes the excellent annual series of WHO World Health Reports and other downloadable documents; 'Information sources' enables access to documents, research reports, press releases, fact sheets, etc. For recent items in any category, 'What’s new' – e.g. for recent fact sheets and press releases.
