Chapter 21 Transport and Interdependence

UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions home page:

A well-designed and informative site. Transport main sections include roads, railways, shipping, local transport and (optimistically) integrated transport. Many of the other main sections – for example, statistics, planning, regions – also contain useful information.

Port of Rotterdam home page:

An informative port site, including history, photo archive, environmental awareness, geographical position and statistics of imports and exports. There are also a port lay-out diagram and, via the news section, fact sheets.

Port of Singapore Authority home page:

A lovely site! View a panorama of the port (and city) from the top of one of the container terminal cranes, check out details of the port: photos, text and statistics of its history, facilities, buildings, services, cruise ships and much more.

BAA home page:

The home page gives access to information about BAA’s UK airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Southampton) as well as flight timetables and "live flight arrivals". The Heathrow section includes a good sub-section on the proposed Terminal 5 development. The "World of BAA" contains much useful general information including traffic statistics.

Stockley Park home page:

A London business park in the Western Corridor (near Heathrow), Stockley Park maintains a large and informative website with maps, occupier lists, future development plans and an extensive press archive. Stockey Park was the first business park to develop an overall transport strategy – in this case, a progressive transport policy aiming to reduce car usage by encouraging the use of public transport. The transport section of the site covers car-sharing, cycling and public transport facilities, plus the public transport links that have been developed in liaison with local bus companies, etc.

World Trade Organization home page:

A useful source of information on a variety of trade topics, with an extensive official document archive and news releases. The research and analysis section has a good list of links to other sites including sources of statistical data.

Port of London home page:

This site is really aimed at the commercial port user, but there are some parts of general interest – for example, the port information section has a list of the terminals and their commodities, the PLA shipping services and a leisure guide (for small craft using the Thames).

Port of Shanghai site:

Gives a summary of port information, container traffic statistics, a map showing the main docks and a table of the throughput of Chinese ports in 1994 (!)

Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok:

A large and informative site, with maps, access information, terminal guides (plans of each level!), details of facilities and a photo gallery. The 'About Hong Kong International Airport' section contains a history of the project, statistics and a summary of key facilities.
