UN Population Information Network (POPIN):

Very sadly, due to discontinued funding, much less information is now available at this site.

US Census Bureau, International Programs Center main page:

Now undoubtedly the prime site for world/national population data. See links to: "World population information" and "International Data Base".

Population Reference Bureau home page:

Offers an interesting selection of population material: explore "What's New" and the "News, Numbers and Analysis" sections. Useful links to: AmeriStat (one-stop source for masses of US population data) and PopNet (an excellent source of global population information, accessed via a clickable map of world regions).

The Union of Concerned Scientists site map page:

From the site map, visit the "population" sub-section of "Global Resources" for some thoughful analysis of world population growth and its relationship with global resources.

World Population Slide Show:

A small and interesting part of a much larger (and interesting!) site developed by the geography department of a US college. Text, maps and pictures of various aspects of world population. Go from this to the Geography Home Page for lots more geography, including student-designed web pages (to be found in "College of the Siskiyous Geography Home Page").

UN High Commissioner for Refugees home page:

A truly excellent site, informative without reducing human problems to mere statistics. Main topics covered: news, statistics, environment, resettlement, images, maps, issues; the "for Teachers" section even includes lesson plans!

The US Committee for Refugees, worldwide refugee information main page:

Another excellent site, providing statistics on refugees and IDPs, annual assessments, news, resources and country-by-country reports.

The China Population Information and Research Center home page:
A useful resource, the China POPIN site offers recent population data for China (1998, 1999), together with historical population data (1949 onwards), family planning data, population density, age composition and socioeconomic data (regional economic indicators, incomes, development) and information on China's administrative areas.
