    How to Use Activate On-line

The Institute for Citizenship has developed this resource in partnership with professionals involved in football and education. There are many different organisations that are able to offer help and support to schools tackling the issues in this project. Some will be able to provide staff to help with sessions, others will arrange for visits and visitors, many will have videos, books and exhibitions to bring the project to life. It will be well worth contacting your local club to establish what resources you can draw on to support this project in your school.

The activities in this pack provide some focused learning opportunities linked to the Key Stage 3 programme of study. However, it has become apparent through the piloting of the project that it works best with students when they also have opportunities to spend time discussing aspects of their knowledge of, and attitudes towards, football, and when these activities are interspersed with games, simulations and current issues related to football. Footballers' pay and conditions, local club issues, merchandising and media coverage all provide useful ways into the subject.

A temptation to resist is to allow the students to develop the impression that this project is just about football. In some cases, when the project was announced in advance, students were disappointed when they were not allowed to talk endlessly about their favourite players. It was the case, however, that many students who were less interested in their lessons before were motivated by considering issues through the lens of football.

The project is designed to be used flexibly so that teachers can teach all or part of the project but still be clear about exactly what elements of the curriculum they are covering. This pack is divided into five sections, which could be taught sequentially as a term's project or as separate units:

Core Lesson: Football, Identity and Violence
    Option 1: Racism and Football
    Option 2: Stadium Development
Option 3: The Business of Football
    Option 4: Botanica.

    Each section consists of:

Briefing notes for teachers on the specific topic
Guidance for a series of activities
    Student resources.
