Is Dover Relevant to Me?

Aim

To consider the ways in which the case-study is relevant to people outside that area.

Objectives

Consider how people respond to situations like those in the case-study.
Consider how people can make a difference.
Analyse the different elements of Citizenship which were illustrated in this case-study.

Resources

Activity Sheet 1.8 , role-play cards for Dover characters from Option 4 Activity 1
Activity Sheet 1.9 , homework sheet for Option 4 Activity 1
Activity Sheet 2.1 , Opinions in the Media
Activity Sheet 3.1 , Dover - What does it Tell Us?

Tasks

1. Share homework answers from Activity Sheet 1.9.
Ask students for their suggestions about the actions the characters could have taken.
Ask students to respond in role: ask them if the suggestion sounds like a good idea? Would they be likely to do it? Why?

2. Media extracts
Recap the work done on Activity Sheet 2.1 , focusing on the questions and the debate about funding for services.

3. What does the Dover case-study tell us?
Use Activity Sheet 3.1 to prompt students to think about the broader lessons to be learnt from studying Dover.
Activity Sheet 3.1 includes 6 factors from the Citizenship orders for students to reflect on. They should be encouraged to ask further questions about the role of each factor and the scope of its influence.
Further questions could be picked up and answered by the teacher or perhaps followed up by a letter or internet enquiry to the relevant organisation.

Discussion Points

Is it helpful to look at one example?
How do you rate the action of the police? And of KRAN?
Are you surprised by the problems that have occurred?

Extension

Follow up class queries with further research. Focus on the experiences of the children in Activity Sheet 2.2 . How would these children feel about the discussion which came from the role play?

Differentiation

Give out the cards for the 6 characters from Activity Sheet 1.8 . Ask students to select some facts from the case-study that might be most important to each of the characters. Why would they choose to emphasise some facts over others?

Homework

Outline what you should do if a similar situation arose in your local area and you wanted to avoid the problems that occurred in Kent.
