1. Group work

•	Split the class into groups of 3-6 students, trying to ensure mixed literacy ability.
•	Hand out the newspaper cuttings on housing from Activity Sheet 2.3 and Activity Sheet 2.4 together with the writing-task Activity Sheet 2.2 and background Activity Sheet 2.1 (the latter could be read out). Explain the task - groups are to complete the table on Activity Sheet 2.2 after reading the newspaper cuttings. Each group could divide the topics in the table amongst themselves if appropriate.
•	Students should then be given enough time to work through the table.

2. Sharing results

•	Ask each group to feed back their notes to the class.

3. Housing policy

•	What does each group think about the dispersal system?

	Are there any other housing possibilities - for example, staying with host families?
	What are the reasons behind the housing options?
	Do you think that asylum seekers have a fair deal?

Students could draw up their own housing policy and report it back to the class.

The topics on Activity Sheet 2.2 vary in difficulty so could be set as appropriate. The teacher could read out some of the cuttings and ask related questions.

Students could write about 'a day in the life of an asylum seeker', making reference to what the housing is like and where they live, and to some of the issues that the newspapers highlight.
