When did Hinduism begin?

What is Hinduism?

Hinduism is the oldest of the main world religions. In fact, it is so old that nobody really knows exactly when or how it began, though most historians agree that it is at least 4,000 years old.

The word ‘Hindi’ actually refers to a geographical area of India where many people believe the religion known as Hinduism began. In this book, ‘Hinduism’ and Hindu’ are used to describe the religion and its followers. Some Hindus prefer to call their religion Sanatan Dharma which means the Eternal Law or eternal truth. It is very difficult, even impossible, to define Hinduism as it is a living tradition that is continuously evolving and absorbing many different beliefs and influences as time goes by.
