The Nelson Handwriting Interactive Whiteboard
CD-ROMs follow the structure of the pupil resource to provide the first five levels of Nelson Handwriting in an electronic format, enabling you to demonstrate the correct letter/join formations on the interactive whiteboard.

Designed to be used with the whole class and small groups, these CD-ROMs complement the Nelson Handwriting books and provide:

• Action rhymes and warm-up activity videos to develop fine and gross motor skills
• Audio patter with animated letter/join formations in the Nelson Handwriting font
• Unique copy and trace practice for pupils
• Interactive games and activities with links to spelling
• Printable worksheets for support and extension.

These CD-ROMs are ideal to support the teaching of handwriting skills and provide bags of practice activities for your pupils. The resources can be used alongside your existing handwriting scheme or independently as a stand-alone resource.

Using these CD-ROMs
Each area of the program can be selected from the Home page or the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

	The Getting ready to write area contains warm-ups designed to help the children prepare for writing by exercising their fingers and hands by modelling the movements they see. Furthermore they help them practise many of the skills involved in writing. Advice on pen grip and posture is also available. View sample

	The Units and worksheets menu allows the teacher to select a unit to work on, and links to especially designed support and extension worksheets. View sample

The Workbooks and Developing Skills books provide structured progression through the course. In the Developing Skills books, each unit opens with a Focus in which the main objective of the lesson is clearly stated. This is then followed by Extra and Extension activities which increase in difficulty. The CD-ROM supports this structure through the five tabs in each unit: Focus, Practising Patterns, Join Formation, Word Building, Game. Each tab can be used as a stand alone activity, or all five can be used as a whole lesson.

The two worksheets for each unit have been differentiated so that one is easier than the unit and the other is more difficult. They can be viewed on screen and printed out.

Support sheets are designed to allow the children to practise the skills that are required to complete the unit successfully. Where there is a join it has been broken up into the individual letters and then leads the child onto joining them at the end.

Extension sheets are designed to allow the more able children to practise the join and then use this skill alongside their word and sentence building skills.

Practising Patterns
Familiar patterns from the books feature throughout the units and are designed to be copied or traced by the teacher and individual children.

Letter/Join Formation
This contains the join animation from the Focus tab but it can be copied or traced here by the teacher and individual children. The animation can be played at two speeds with supporting audio patter for Blue and Red Levels. You’ll also find the Fox Box tips from the book appearing on screen to offer help!

Word Building
This section allows the teacher or child to select words that they would like to copy or trace. The words are a combination of ones taken from the text books and high frequency words from the Literacy Strategy for each year group. These words will feature the focus letter or join.

Game
There are four types of game that have been carefully designed to allow the children to practise their handwriting skills, as well as their reading and word building capabilities.

	The Letter bank can be accessed at any time. It allows the teacher to show the animation single letter and joins (NB, different letters/joins available at different levels). View sample

As the CD-ROMs follow the structure of the Nelson Handwriting books closely, the Teacher’s Book (alongside the Scope and Sequence) can help with embedding the use of ICT alongside printed materials as well as with lesson planning and gives references to separate Focus and Extension resources as well as useful tips on how to develop and assess handwriting skills.
