Book Bands and Levelling

Fast Lane texts are finely graded from book bands Yellow to Emerald (Fast Lane levels 6 to 25). The books feature subtle level indicators on the spine and below the barcode, so the reading level is not immediately obvious to the pupil or their peers.

The levelling system is built from and complements the PM levelling system – the original book banded reading scheme. Fast Lane includes all the great features and strategies that PM employs, but also incorporates features that have been informed by extensive scientific research that are relevant to older readers. Fast Lane texts have a new word ratio of 1:16 (including technical vocabulary) and text constructions that are highly supportive of the readers.

New vocabulary is reinforced throughout the text and succeeding books. The books within Fast Lane range from 16 to 24 pages, allowing pupils to feel a sense of achievement at having read a whole book in one reading session.
