Course Description

Sociology can be defined as the study of society and how people relate to each other in social groups such as families, schools and workplaces.
We examine issues of social identity such as gender, social class, ethnicity and religion, and how these impact on our life chances and related important aspects of our lives. Students will learn to analyse and evaluate complex debates, arguments, concepts and theories concerning people and their behaviour in 21st Century society.

Benefits
  • Develops students’ critical and evaluative skills in explaining the complexities of contemporary society.

  • Helps students develop their awareness and understanding of people in a diverse and dynamically changing social world.

  • Applies to all careers where an empathy with others and recognition of why they behave as they do is essential. Former sociology students work in many fields including community and social services, management, the police and legal occupations, health and medicine and teaching.
