Assessment

AS Level: two written examinations
A2 Level: three written examinations

Course Description

Religious Studies is the study of religion and related issues from an academic standpoint. Neither tutors nor students are assumed to have any particular religious beliefs.

At AS level, one of the two modules allows students to specialise in one of three world religions: Buddhism, Christianity or Islam. This allows the course to meet the needs of students and schools with differing religious (or non-religious) approaches.

The remainder of the AS involves study of a variety of problems and issues connected with religion under the heading of “philosophy of religion”. Students are enabled to develop their own perspectives by discussing these issues from various religious and non-religious perspectives.

The A2 course focuses on Philosophy of Religion and the theme of Life, Death and Beyond. These topics will be approached in such a way that links can be made with any of the world religions studied in the first module of the AS.

Benefits
  • Religious Studies helps students to develop enquiring, critical and reflective approaches to religion and to wider issues of life.

  • The study of religious beliefs other than one’s own helps to develop open-mindedness, tolerance, and imaginative empathy.

  • Religious Studies also helps students to reflect on and develop their own beliefs and attitudes.

“The variation that is added from partaking in video conferencing is refreshing, and the rewards of working for yourself are truly satisfying”
Amy Teesdale, Shelfield Sports College.

The AS Level modules comprise:

- A study of the teachings and practices of either Buddhism, or Christianity,

or Islam
- Philosophy of Religion (including religious experience, psychology of religion, and atheism & postmodernism).
(The AS may be awarded as a discrete
qualification or count as 50% of the A2).

The A2 Level modules comprise:

- Studies in the New Testament
- Studies in the philosophy of religion
- Studies in religion and human
experience.
