Course Description (AQA syllabus A – practical scheme X)

AS and A2 Level Physics extends the ideas studies at Dual Award Science and GCSE Physics. The AS Level introduces new areas and concepts, many of which have a high mathematical content. These include vectors, equations of motion, the Young Modulus, waves, EMF in circuits, magnetic effects, light, interference, diffraction and wave particle duality, then at A2 level the students go on to study circular motion, oscillations, fields, nuclear and medical physics.

Practical Work

The course contains a complete set of school supervised experiments directed towards competences required in the practical exam.

Benefits
  • AS and A2 Physics is relevant for a number of careers, including pure and applied research all branches of engineering including RAF, teaching, medicine etc.

  • Physicists will doubtless be at the forefront of low carbon energy systems development of the future.

  • Physics gives the students the basic knowledge they need to take their studies further in this subject or a related subject

The AS Level modules comprise:

- Particles, Quantum Phenomenon & Electricity

- Mechanics, Materials & Waves

- Experimental Work.
The AS may be awarded as a discrete
qualification or count as 50% of the A2.

The A2 Level modules comprise:

- Circular Motion, SHM, Fields

- Nuclear, Thermal & Medical Physics

- Experimental Work.
