Course Description: GCSE

This course can be taught over one or two years, during which students will develop a competency in Latin and an appreciation and understanding of its influence on today’s languages. Students study the literature and culture of the Roman World, gaining a greater knowledge of our ancient heritage.
Working through the course, students develop analytical skills and their studies support their learning in English, Modern Foreign Languages and Science.

Benefits
  • GCSE Latin helps prepare students for A Level studies in Latin and Classical Civilisation.

  • Latin develops students’ language and cognitive skills.

Course Description: AS & A2

The AS and A2 Level courses help to develop further competency in the Latin language, and deeper appreciation of the literature and its influence on later writing.
Students further enhance their analytical skills, largely through study of longer passages of set texts.
Building on the GCSE, there is a larger wordlist for AS level. Many of these words appear in the set texts, so can be learnt in context.

Benefits
  • Latin develops students’ language and cognitive skills, being the foundation of many European foreign languages.

  • The course provides a useful foundation for other subjects, such as English Language, Linguistics, History, Archaeology and Modern Foreign Languages.

“Without video conferencing, I would never have had the means to discover my passion for ‘all things ancient’. Thanks to NTDL, I have been offered a place to read Classics at King’s College, Cambridge: something I would never have dreamed of just three years ago” Elizabeth Lawn, Ryde School with Upper Chine.

- Latin verse and prose literature.
(The AS may be awarded as a discrete
