Background

In the February 2005 White Paper, "14–19 Education and Skills", the Government set out plans to transform learning for 14–19 year olds, addressing low levels of participation in education.  The Government’s reforms include the introduction of Diplomas, designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in today’s work place.

The content for each Diploma line is developed by Diploma Development Partnerships (DDPs). These include sector skills councils, employers, schools and further and higher education institutions and set out in detail what young people taking these qualifications will be expected to know and achieve.
The DDPs will ensure that the content of the qualifications meets the needs of employers and higher education - including a requirement to succeed in achieving functional English, Maths and ICT.
