AS Samples

The student book guides and supports the student through the specification and the assessment requirements. Online electronic resources, linked to the content of the book, encourage development of key skills such as exploring and comparing text extracts through detailed analysis, getting the most from wider reading, formulating reasoned arguments and opinions, essay planning, structured research, producing quality coursework and preparation for written papers to maximise exam potential.

This extract from the student book is from Unit 1: Aspects of Narrative, and asks the student to consider and explore the importance of place and setting in fiction.

There follow a series of activities, with a linked electronic text analysis tool, based around Thomas Hardy’s poem The Darkling Thrush. Students are asked to consider how Hardy uses setting in the poem. Using the online text analysis tool, they can go further and explore the language and structure of the poem in greater detail, identifying examples from the poem to justify their opinions.
