Gold Levels 21 and 22
In PM Gold Level, sentences are more complicated with an average length of 10 words. To complete this level successfully, children need to apply reading strategies such as breaking long words down into syllables. Multi-syllable words are used frequently throughout this level, for example, beautiful, suddenly, Grandfather, meanwhile.
Gold Level consolidates young readers’ recognition of common suffixes, such as –ful, –ly and –tion. It enhances their understanding of the two parts in compound words like meat-eating, however and grasshopper. It also helps them grasp word onsets such as spr– in spread, squ– in squawk and so on.
The language used in the Traditional Tales and Plays at Gold Level has a distinct flavour; the plots utilise children’s reasoning skills and encourage them to learn the distinction between fantasy and reality. By the end of Gold Level, the 600 words that dominate written English should be known by sight.
